Madam, – James Moran (July 23rd) states that the only reason why a flat rate of property tax should not be imposed is “the populist one”.
I live in a three-room cottage with no central heating, no bath. A mile or so down the road from me, a recently-built residence extends to two storeys covering an area of at least 75ft by 125ft, not including a large garage. My entire cottage would probably fit into one of its rooms.
Am I “populist” because I would object to paying the same rate of property tax as the person in the mansion?
