Sir, – In your Editorial (February 26th) celebrating Daniel Day-Lewis’s record three Best Actor Oscars, you seem to have relied on cinematic history (Henry Fonda et al) rather than historical fact to characterise the 16th US president’s vocal delivery.
There were two speakers at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg in 1863 during the American Civil War: Edward Everett, the outstanding political orator of the day; and later President Lincoln with a mere two-minute address in a “high-pitched, reedy timbre”.
Truly, a victory for a speech and not a speechifier – and DDL’s research! – Yours, etc,
