A twinning too far

Sir, – I see Dublin is to be twinned with Beijing (Home News, June 3rd). Why were we not consulted on this? It would seem that economic considerations are trumping all others when it comes to deciding who we rub up against. China is one of the most repressive regimes in the world. It is a communist country with aggressive imperialist intentions and an appalling human rights record. This twinning should not happen.

In our rush to economic salvation we should not abandon discernment. – Yours, etc,
