A chara, – According to Taoiseach Enda Kenny now is not the time to have a poll on the Border situation and it should wait until the economy improves (Home News, October 16th). A vote on a united Ireland should not be linked to the current economic situation as a united Ireland would offer a lot of economic benefits to all regions of Ireland. The main benefits would include a bigger Irish domestic market, which would make it more attractive for investment and easier for domestic companies to expand. The North could have an economic policy which suits a small country. The current resources which are spent on cross Border institutions could be used to make the Irish economy more competitive.
Therefore a vote on a united Ireland should not wait until the economic situation improves, as a united Ireland could be the basis for a sustainable economy and long-term growth. – Is mise,
