Sir, - I enjoyed Fintan O'Toole's column of November 14th. I agree that we do not need to import hypocrisy from Texas where those against abortion are fully supportive of the death penalty and where they lead the nation in this barbaric practice. I am disappointed, though, that he did not follow through and criticise those who are against the death penalty but in favour of abortion.
I would like to take issue with him on two points. Firstly, the original abortion referendum was sought after a group was set up to seek to have abortions carried out in Ireland. This was to be based on the successful American efforts - challenging the protection in the Constitution through the courts.
Secondly, the British abortion regime is not liberal on paper. In fact, it is rather restrictive, leading to the conclusion that it is not possible to introduce limited abortion. Inevitably, its introduction leads to abortion on demand, as has happened in Britain.
Is it not hypocritical for some who supported holding referendums on divorce until a politically correct outcome was achieved to oppose having such referendums on abortion? After all, it is just a matter of referring the question to the people. In what way is this illiberal? - Yours, etc.,
Mrs Mary Stewart, Ardeskin, Donegal Town.
