Madam, - In The Irish Times of May 1st we have it from the top person in the British forces, Gen Michael Jackson, that if the allegations of abuse and torture of Iraqi people by British soldiers are proven, "the perpetrators would not be fit to wear the Queen's uniform."
As two soldiers have been convicted of murder by British courts and, subsequently, were allowed to rejoin the army, we can therefore deduce that it is acceptable for murderers of Irish citizens to remain in the British army but not those guilty of torturing Iraqi civilians. - Yours, etc.,
JOHN DOYLE, Church Court, Castleknock, Dublin 15.
