Sir, – Reading Aidan Hehir’s article (Opinion February 14th) on the flagrant abuses of the veto by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, it is easy to see why the Non-Proliferation Treaty has not succeeded in ridding the world of nuclear weapons.
When the NPT entered into force in 1970, it was in effect under the guardianship of the veto-wielding nuclear-weaponed five permanent members of the UN Security Council: US, UK, France, Russia and China. A case of putting the fox in charge of the chicken-coop? – Yours, etc,
