Madam, – The Bank of Ireland’s changes in its charges for current account holders are very difficult to understand. The use of direct debit is discouraged, since it does not count in the total number of transactions that are required to avoid charges, even though this must cost the bank very little, while telephone banking, which must be expensive for the bank, is encouraged.

However, I have checked with the bank that these charges are easy to avoid. My wife and I have separate current accounts. All we need to do, once a quarter, is to transfer €100 online back-and-forth nine times between our accounts. – Yours, etc,
