Madam, - I read with interest the news that the HSE is planning to reduce the number of office-based administrators by approximately 1,000 (The Irish Times, May 15th).

It would appear that the Minister and her colleagues have finally grasped that our health service is burdened by an excessive number of bureaucrats who make a negligible contribution to patient care.

Unfortunately, since her appointment as Minister for Health in 2005, Ms Harney has increased the number of HSE administrators by more than 2,000.

Would it not have been better for all concerned if she had simply appointed only 1,000? - Yours, etc,
