Madam, - George Willoughby (March 18th) drew attention to sources of advertising for alcoholic products but he omitted to mention one valuable area where alcohol is heavily promoted to a captive collection of young teenagers.
We visited the cinema last week to see the 3.20 p.m. showing of The Missing, which is rated 15PG, at Ster Century, Liffey Valley. Preceding the main feature the audience, which included many young teenagers, was treated to no fewer than four separate advertisements for alcohol.
These were followed by the cynical and derisory Diageo commercial which urges us to "drink sensibly"!
Is it legal to advertise alcohol in cinemas at 3.20 in the afternoon to 15-year olds? - Yours, etc.,
VIVIENNE FLANAGAN, Butterfield Avenue, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14.
