Madam, - I am surprised at the letters in your columns decrying the changing times at Aer Lingus. I am of an age to remember when air travel was expensive and a very infrequent activity (and when the attendants were snooty). I now travel extensively and exult in being able to.
This is possible only because the fares are affordable. If this means sacrificing a few luxuries, I am all for it - as, I suspect, are a majority of Irish taxpayers. But my surprise is largely because of the amazing fear of change displayed in the complaints.
In the past ten years Ireland has undergone tremendous change, largely to the benefit of its people. Turning Aer Lingus around is just another change and it must be welcomed. - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - Several recent correspondents ( have been berating Aer Lingus for reducing of services and costs in order to be competitive and not lose money. May I suggest that if they feel so strongly, they chip in their own money so that Aer Lingus can continue to provide a level and variety of service that its customers are no longer prepared to pay for?
Their implication that the State - i.e. the taxpayer - should resume providing subsidies to support tight-fisted customers is outrageous. - Yours, etc.,
TONY ALLWRIGHT, Killiney, Co Dublin.
