Madam, - I see the Americans intend to punish France for saying it would oppose a draft resolution (which the Americans anyway thought unnecessary) authorising war against Iraq.
America could deliver a powerful symbolic rebuke by returning the Statue of Liberty to France. Besides, the lady herself, must feel uncomfortable in New York, if her country of origin can no longer speak its mind at UN headquarters. - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - I read with dismay Jonathan Steele's report describing the death of 14 Iraqis involved in a demonstration outside US a command post West of Baghdad (The Irish Times, April 30th). I did not support the pre-emptive strike on Iraq, but with the war "over" I had hoped that at least the Iraqis could begin to enjoy the freedoms offered by "regime change".
So much for that! One wonders how Saddam Hussein would have reacted to a crowd of demonstrators. - Yours, etc.,
