Sir, – The new Bank of Ireland television advertisement is ageist. Why would this apparently healthy and mobile woman want to leave her house and live with her son and his wife?
The backstory, presumably, is that she lived in that house all her married life. Why would she want to leave the comfort of her neighbourhood and her neighbours and her house and garden? Living in someone else’s house, even if it is your son’s, is never the same as owning and running and being “master” of your own domain.
She would have to live by their rules which would not be easy to adapt to.
She does not look happy being in this new house with its replica of her old sitting room. Why would she want to replicate it? It will not fit into her new world as it is part of her old one.
I would not like to be that woman, ever.
– Yours,etc,
BRENDA CARDEN,
Dartry, Dublin 6.
