Aine Ni Chonaill On Immigration

Sir, - It really is nonsense to say that RTE should apologise for having Ms Ainne Ni Connaill on the Late Late Show. What is it with these people? It would seem that if something is discussed with someone they do not agree with, an immediate apology must be issued. It is quite legitimate for Ms Ni Chonnaill to be a guest and to express her views on the Late Late Show. What are the champions of free speech, such as the Anti-Fascist League, afraid of? Could it be that they fear she is articulating the concerns of many Irish people. It would appear that anyone who has an opposing view to these people is immediately labelled "fascist". Was it not the trademark of fascists in 1930s Germany to disrupt meetings of people who disagreed with them? While it goes without saying that there are genuine asylum seekers, surely no one can be naive enough to believe that these are not just a small minority of the increasing numbers of people arriving here. It is nothing less than scandalous that we have large numbers of our young people sleeping on the streets with nowhere to go and apparently few who care. These unfortunate people are not given accommodation, money or support services by the State. They do not have organisations lining up to fight their corner. The Irish people have demonstrated time and again their concern for the less fortunate of the world by their unequalled generosity. As an ordinary taxpayer I want to see our limited resources being spent (not squandered like Mr Ahern's millions for the GAA) on solving the many shortcomings in our own society before we take on the problems of the rest of the world. - Yours, etc.,James J.
