Sir, – While congratulating both Ireland soccer teams on qualifying for Euro 2016, Tim McCormick (Letters, November 21st) believes it is time footballers from the whole island were brought together, in the same way as other sports such as rugby, hockey and cricket have been.
It is a proposal which deserves strong support, as it brings back wonderful memories of the game against Brazil at Lansdowne Road in 1973.
But a united Ireland team may well come at a price, as it would prompt another occasion when fans must endure the playing of Ireland's Call, or some other equally nauseating common "anthem".
