Sir, – Congratulations to both Irish football teams on their qualification for Euro 2016!
But would not an all-Ireland team prove even stronger, as has been demonstrated in other sports, such as rugby, hockey and cricket?
I remember in 1973 the enormous enjoyment given by an all-Ireland team that gave a most creditable performance against a strong Brazilian side. Is now not the time to repeat the experiment in another friendly international match more than 40 years later?
After all, the Troubles have now receded and both teams are operating from positions of strength. As well as providing the fans with enjoyment, it could provide welcome finance for the sport in both parts of the island. – Yours, etc,
