Madam, - Your issue of December 11th reports that the Irish section of Amnesty has called for the appointment of a Minister for Human Rights.
Would it not make greater sense to enhance the role of the Human Rights Commission and to include within its scope the work of other bodies such as the Equality Authority, ideally under the chairmanship of a High Court judge? Such a body could also be given the final say in whether or not deportations are carried out.
My reason for making this suggestion is that I believe human rights can better be protected by a body independent of the Government and reporting directly to the Oireachtas.
