Sir, - With the wording for the Treaty of Amsterdam referendum just published, the Government must now consider the date on which the vote will take place. The National Youth Council of Ireland believes it should be held at a weekend.

Such a move would make it easier for young people to vote without having other commitments like work or study. The feedback we received from young voters during the Presidential election was one of anger. Holding the vote on a Thursday was an impediment to their full participation in the ballot.

An entire generation has been born since Ireland joined the European Economic Community in 1973. For thousands of young people, this will be their first experience of voting on Europe. Young people are often described as part of Europe's future. It must also be remembered that they are part of Europe's present and deserve their say in current issues.

While nobody can be compelled to vote, everything possible must be done to maximise participation in the referendum. The role of the Referendum Commission in helping to inform people about the issues at stake is an important aspect. Holding the vote on a day that will facilitate people in going to the polls is just as crucial. - Yours, etc.,
