A chara, – In "An open secret: Ireland's lunatic asylums" (Weekend, January 29th), Rosita Boland writes regarding the key post of resident medical superintendant, or RMS, "they were always men".
Records show that, having been acting RMS at Ballinasloe Mental Hospital in the 1930s, Dr Ada English was appointed resident medical superintendant of Ballinasloe and Castlerea Mental Hospitals in June 1941. She remained so until her retirement in August 1942. – Is mise,
