Sir, – Since we’re off to the polls on May 31st anyway, might I suggest the Government incentivises a high turn-out, and some good will, by also running a referendum to amend Article 31 of Bunreacht na h-Éireann regarding the composition of the Council of State.

Isn’t it time that the automatic and unalienable right of former office holders to sit on the Council of State was abridged? It should be for the Oireachtas, either the Houses, President or both, to remove this right from former office holders if they fail to show continued fidelity to the nation and loyalty to the State. Every other member of the council demonstrates the active confidence of their peers or patron. – Yours, etc,
