Anti-social problems in Eyre Square

Sir, – It's disappointing to read that local Garda chief superintendent Tom Curley last month suggested that Eyre Square might have to be closed after dark in response to anti-social behaviour in the Galway square (News, November 1st).

All too often the response is to close the amenity and deprive the general public of access rather than to police the area effectively. Garda resources should be managed more effectively to ensure the area is appropriately policed. If he has insufficient resources, he can request assistance from the military 1km up the road to provide a safe environment in Eyre Square to the benefit of the general well-behaved members of the public. – Yours, etc,

GERARD REYNOLDS,

Tuam, Co Galway.
