Antibiotics – a global emergency

Sir, – In the face of the already occurring antimicrobial resistance emergency, you advocate more concerted action on a global level to combat the approaching human disaster (“Antibiotics – A global emergency”, Editorial, September 26th). This is undoubtedly true, but what is really needed is a totally new international research effort, with finances provided annually to a dedicated fund by governments. This research and any discoveries resulting from it must be totally separated from the pharma conglomerates, and any new antibiotics resulting should be made available at cost price to all countries in the world. – Yours, etc,

DON MULLINS,

Carlow.
