Sir, – I note from Lorna Siggins's article on the proposed Apple Data Centre in Athenry that community groups all along the route of the disused Athenry-Collooney rail alignment have turned to Apple to try to secure seed funding for a greenway project on the old rail route ("Council delays decision on Apple data centre in Galway", June 18th). It's worth a try; a forward-thinking company like Apple may well see the merit in supporting essential infrastructure in the vicinity of its plant, at a time when backward-looking local authorities can only hanker for the lost age of steam trains.
This strip of public land should of course not only be a leisure and commuting route but also a data corridor to facilitate many more projects like the Apple Data Centre, but how do we explain this not-so-complex concept to some of our local politicians? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – A greenway for cyclists and walkers would surely provide a welcome boost for tourism and the local economy. We need more projects like this. – Yours, etc,
