Sir, – Denis O'Shaughnessy's account of media reaction to the Ardnacrusha hydroelectric scheme ("An Irishman's Diary", August 24th) omits one crucial, and long-lasting, commentary: Denis Johnston's fine play The Moon in the Yellow River (1931), which featured a German engineer attempting to build a dam, faced with IRA attempts to prevent it.
The finest line is the German’s comment on the row that ensues: “This is no country! It’s a damned debating society!” Johnston’s play was probably the finest product of the Shannon scheme – and that’s including the electricity. – Yours, etc,
