Sir, - Sometimes we need to lake an objective look at ourselves from abroad (in this case, Paul Robinson of Sweden, June 4th), to realise how ridiculous our situation is.
A person may choose to protect his premises by means of any or all of the latest technology - passive infra red sensors, security lights, inertia sensors, security cameras - all of which, perhaps, connect to a central computerised control by means of telephone lines or even radio link; the ultimate aim being that the Garda may be informed of the presence of an intruder.
And gardai duly arrive - armed with sticks. - Yours, etc.,
