Sir, - The arrogance of AIB is astounding. For years it connived at defrauding of the Revenue Commissioners (and hence of the taxpayers) of as yet untold millions; when found out, it proclaimed it probably owed £35 million. When the Revenue Commissioners appeared to be putting a figure of £300 million as being due, AIB upped its offer to £150 million.
This shows just what it was hoping to get away with. Furthermore, the offer of the £150 million was made with the threat that if the Revenue sought more, the bank would fight it in the courts. There has never been any apology to the taxpayers of this State.
The Revenue Commissioners must now pursue AIB for the last penny owing. Also, ignoring the bank's threat, they should make one of their own: that there is a penalty of imprisonment for tax defrauders. If justice was properly administered in this country, some bankers could renew acquaintance with some of their political friends therein. - Yours, etc.,
Dermot C. Clarke, Wilson Road, Mount Merrion, Co Dublin.
