Nobody is disputing the need for good, effective marketing and administration in the theatre. What concerns many of us is the suspicion that administration is being prioritised at the expense of the art itself. Perhaps Ms O'Kelly can allay our fears.

In the meantime, may I refer her to some statistics obtained from the British Arts Council? Over there, in the years 1987-1997, actor/weeks worked fell by 21 per cent, marketing expenditure rose by 30 per cent and audiences dropped by 13 per cent.

A clear case of less money spent on the product, more on the packaging and fewer people buying it. - Yours, etc.,
