Sir, - In the week of World Press Freedom Day, is there any chance that I might have my voice heard on the issue of asylum-seekers?
Those of us who oppose the unrestricted entry of refugees to this country are amazed to find that we are so much out of step with the majority of your letter-writers, because their views do not reflect the anecdotal evidence which we experience on a daily basis.
And that evidence is this: a majority have no problem with those who are fleeing persecutions, in fear of their lives and who meet the United Nations criteria of asylum-seekers. However, like every other country in Western Europe, we cannot have open borders and those politicians who are now so busy calling the rest of us bigots and racists should take time off to educate themselves about what has been happening since the fall of the Iron Curtain.
I have no doubt that this is what happened when Hitler rose to power in Germany. The "politically incorrect" were silenced and then, as now, could not be heard above the din. Is this the legacy we want to hand our children? - Yours, etc.,
