Madam, - The controversy in your Letters page over a simple restaurant review leaves me astounded. I cannot afford to go to Patrick Guilbaud's for lunch or dinner. A visit there would cause my family's budget a huge setback. At the same time I hold nothing against people who can and do frequent the place.

If people feel so strongly about the amount someone chooses to spend on food, why do they not condemn expensive clothes, shoes, handbags, holidays? Brown Thomas should be asked to cease trade immediately. Let's ban everything extravagant and all take a vow of poverty.

The truth of the matter is there will always be people who can afford a lot and people who can afford little. Life is full of injustices, but being able to afford an expensive meal is not one of them. - Yours, etc,
