Sir, - In his column today, (January 10th) Kevin Myers rightly draws attention to our appalling official reaction to the attack on two German tourists in the Phoenix Park some years ago. Last summer there was a similar - though happily non fatal - attack on an Australian tourist along the River Walk in our city centre here, one which left her permanently scarred, with 37 facial stitches and corresponding trauma.
At the time, the media reported much suitably public commiseration from our elected representatives and paid officials - together with various expressions of incredulity that such things should happen here. Since then, however, the River Walk where this attack took place has remained unlighted at night - and this despite the fact that public lighting standards (complete with bulbs) have been in place there since October 1st last year, at least. - Yours, etc.,
Shantalla Road,
Galway.
