Madam, - We are sometimes asked why we initiated Positive Ageing Week and have found that a handy reply is to refer to An Irishman's Diary of September 3rd, in which Kevin Myers eviscerates CORI, the social lobby group.

CORI, being intent on promoting a particular message, is of course fair game in the hurly-burly of ideas, but Mr Myers strays into offensiveness and the ugliest type of ageism when he says that Father Sean Healy represents "a handful of dog-collared or wimpled OAPs of almost no importance in modern Ireland".

For the record, Positive Ageing Week runs from September 26th to October 2nd, and the involvement of older religious is particularly welcome. - Yours, etc,

PAUL MURRAY, Head of Communications,  Age Action Ireland, Camden Street, Dublin 2.
