Averil Power and Fianna Fáil

A chara, – As someone who campaigned with both Yes Equality and Fianna Fáil over the last number of weeks, I appreciate the hard work that both Micheál Martin and Averil Power put in.

With its conservative, rural base, many Fianna Fáil supporters would have been No voters and if the party wanted to be as cynical and opportunistic as some have suggested, those votes could easily have been gone after. Instead, Fianna Fáil took a strong position since 2012 of supporting marriage equality, something championed by and passionately advocated by Micheál Martin from the start.

I canvassed for a Yes vote with many members of Fianna Fáil – both ordinary members and public representatives, young and old, male and female – and all were hardworking and dedicated to the cause.

Averil Power’s media campaign denigrating her former party, now in its third day, disparages both the good work that we all did and indeed her own Trojan efforts and suggests a broader political agenda may be at work. She has made her point. Let’s all move on. – Is mise,
