Sir, - When was Ireland's participation in George W. Bush's coalition for the so-called "war against terror" debated and approved in the houses of the Oireachtas? Was it even approved at Cabinet level?
I thought that Ireland, as a member of the UN's Security Council, was there to uphold international law, humanitarian conventions and to strive for the peaceful resolution of conflict. I am outraged and appalled that the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, appears to think he has a mandate from the Irish people to commit our country to supporting this very murderous and destructive war. - Yours, etc.,
