Sir, - Amelia Power (May 21st), a visiting American student and reluctant passenger of Dublin Bus, commiserates with the besieged and often abused drivers. She highlights instances of antisocial and illegal behaviour that, for a reason unknown to her, go unchecked by the authorities.

She has experienced that ugly part of the Irish culture from which most visiting Americans, confined to tour coaches, have long been insulated. Unfortunately, rowdiness is not confined to inner-city buses but infects all walks of Irish life and it is apparent this obnoxious public behaviour has become so ingrained in our collective mindset it is blithely ignored across the entire spectrum of our society. - Yours, etc.,
