Banking inquiry

Sir, – I was not surprised to read that Brian Goggin, former chief executive of Bank of Ireland, would neither confirm nor deny that his salary at the bank was €4 million a year ("Goggin refuses to comment on reports of €650,000 annual pension", May 1st).

What did surprise me, however, was his belief that the Bank of Ireland “was a pretty conservative bank”.

I shudder to think what he would have been paid if it wasn’t “pretty conservative”. – Yours, etc,
