'BARBARIC' BULLFIGHTING

RUARC GAHAN,

RUARC GAHAN,

Madam, - John Fleming's succinct but graphic description of the bullfight (Magazine, November 2nd) strengthened my resolve never to visit Spain until bull fighting has been abolished. Certainly we must get rid of fox hunting and hare coursing in our own country, but bullfighting is in an altogether different league of cruelty.

An association of civilised nations, which the EU is obviously not, would never have allowed membership to a country where such a barbaric activity is permitted. The EU can never claim moral maturity until animal welfare legislation has been strengthened to a level where countries allowing cruelty would be outlawed until they mend their ways. - Yours, etc.,

RUARC GAHAN, Knocknaboley, Hollywood, Co Wicklow.
