Sir, I read with interest your article on the front page (August 16th) under the heading "Leaving Cert English examiners complain of heavy sentences". It appears that people, especially the young, have so little knowledge of or regard for basic English grammar that they have difficulty in getting over what they want to say accurately.

It occurred to me that one way to help the situation might be for papers such as The Irish Times and other outlets, in addition to the ever popular and educational crosswords, to add some sort of grammar quiz. The idea might be to list a number of grammatically incorrect sentences, and readers would be invited to correct the sentence and to say why.

Just an idea! Yours, etc.,

Howth Road.
