Sir, – I attended the same performance of The Beauty Queen of Leenane in Galway last Tuesday as did Peter Crawley. Reading his tetchy review convinces me that we were not at the same play ("Old elemental conflicts meet new pop-culture obsessions", September 21st).
He saw a pastiche work without weight offered with peculiar reverence by the Druid production. I saw again, after 20 years, the crises of an embattled quartet whose lives are all too familiar to us, told here in Martin McDonagh’s daring weave of hilarity, rage and pity.
It is a powerful piece of work, given with sure-footed truth by a cast and director at the top of their game. – Yours, etc,
