Beef And Lamb Prices

Sir, - Farmers are receiving the lowest prices in modern history for their lamb and beef

Sir, - Farmers are receiving the lowest prices in modern history for their lamb and beef. They are selling beef at 72p per lb, yet consumers are being asked to pay three times that amount in the shops. Similarly, farmers are selling lamb at £1 per lb while highstreet shoppers are being asked to pay up to four times that amount.

Why has the fall in the price of lamb and beef not been passed on to the consumer? Who are the middlemen making enormous profit at a time when Irish farmers are receiving so little for their produce?

Consumer organisations in Ireland need to be vigilant on this matter. Explanations are needed because consumers are simply not getting a fair deal.-Yours, etc., Niall Andrews,
