Madam, - I commend Dr Garret FitzGerald on his excellent column in last Saturday's edition. Scientific discoveries about on the origins of the universe, life, human consciousness, the constituents of matter and many other fascinating concepts never cease to overwhelm me with wonder.
It is through such scientific knowledge that humankind can truly ponder its existence and its place on a time-line that was conceived with the beginning of our universe. Yet these are subjects that are largely unknown outside the sphere of science education.
I agree with Dr FitzGerald that knowledge of such fundamental issues pertaining to our own existence should be imparted to all students and at as early an age as these concepts can be comprehended.
Sadly however, most people live out their lives unaware of such subjects and many even accept a supernatural substitute because they were never actually given a choice. As we are all unfortunately too well aware, this can sometimes prove troublesome. - Yours, etc,
