Sir, – We recently enjoyed a great day on the Royal Canal cycleway from Maynooth to Mullingar, covering 62km in beautiful scenery and smooth cycle paths.
However, we were disappointed on our return from Mullingar to be refused carriage of our bicycles on the Sligo to Dublin intercity train, despite being assured in Maynooth that we could take our cycles on the return train.
Where is the joined-up thinking between the Minister for Transport and Tourism, government agencies, Fáilte Ireland, and Iarnród Éireann?
The National Cycle Policy Framework (NCPF) promised the retrofitting of rolling stock with flip-up seats to provide for the carriage of more than two bikes.
Note the bike-friendly rail infrastructure which the Dutch, Danish and Germans have in place to give flexibility to tourists and commuters alike.
How long must us cyclists wait?
– Yours, etc,
MARY LAWLOR
Rathgar,
Dublin 6.
