Sir, - In light of the recent horrific accidents in which two motorcyclists died and two more were seriously injured in two separate incidents, let me appeal again through your good paper for greater care to be exercised by motorists vis a vis same.
1. Motorcyclists are extremely vulnerable and will usually be badly injured in all confrontations with other vehicles. 2. With the coming of the summer months more and more bikes will be on the roads, so extra care is required. 3. Motorcycles are smaller and, therefore, their speed is hard to judge. 4. When turning right against oncoming traffic, do not see an oncoming motorcyclist as the line of least resistance - allow him his right of way if that be the case. 5. Litigation involving a crash will be lengthy and costly. 6. Motorcyclists did not cause your frustrations so don't take it out on them. 7. Motorcyclists are trying to get from A to B just as you are. 8. Pot holes require a degree of avoidance which may cause swerving. If following such a biker, allow for this. We would all like good surfaces if we could get them. 9. If "nosing" your way out of a side road or driveway, please remember that you will cause extreme problems to cyclists and motorcyclists who may be travelling on the inside lanes. 10. Remember your son or daughter may decide on this means of transport, so afford all motorcyclists the benefit of the doubt it's safer.
I sometimes feel like a voice crying in the wilderness, but if even one life can be saved by someone else reading this it will be worth it! Yours, etc.,
