Sir, - The proposed "traffic-calming" measures in the Avoca area of Blackrock, as proposed by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, are nothing short of amazing. Included in the plan is the permanent closure of no less than five roads, including the fine road of Avoca Avenue.
There are traffic problems in Blackrock and I can understand the frustration that through-traffic can cause to some residents, but this proposal is completely disproportionate to the problem. The plan will adversely effect many more local people than it purports to serve. This is certainly a case of using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. The through-traffic issue should be addressed in a manner which is proportionate to the problem and which gives least inconvenience to the local community as a whole.
The problem is primarily a peak-time issue, confined to a small number of roads and should be addressed with peak-time and targeted solutions. Control of through-traffic volume and speed is being managed in other areas without multiple and permanent road closures.
Considering the wide implications of the plan, other than publishing the statutory notice in the press, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is keeping a suspiciously low profile. What is going on? - Yours, etc., Derek Carroll,
Blackrock, Co Dublin.
