Sir, – Having just watched another magnificent Irish display in the Rugby World Cup against Italy, it struck me how many Irish fans were at the game. Had the game been played at the Aviva or Thomond Park it would be hard to imagine a better atmosphere.

It is a strong indication of how many Irish people have emigrated since the start of the recession. I doubt that we would have seen anything like that support at the height of the Celtic tiger.

It is somewhat sad to know that these people were left with no choice but to emigrate, yet I cannot help but be inspired by their positivity and the genuine smiles on their faces.

However, what is more inspiring than all that is the amazing, wonderful behaviour of these young and not so young supporters who show such an example to the world how sport and life should be enjoyed. I am sure the pictures beamed around the world of a sea of green singing in harmony on one of the biggest stages in world sport will have more of a positive effect on this country than any amount of millions spent on advertising.

These magnificent supporters are our new ambassadors abroad, they are young and intelligent and will be the future of this country, so I think it only fitting that we acknowledge the wonderful job they are doing. I might I add the team aren’t half bad either! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Congratulations to all in the great win over Italy, but I suggest that Ireland employ an additional “mime coach” before our match against Wales. At least this coach might be able to teach our players – many who obviously are unable to learn the words of Ireland’s Call – to at least pretend to sing the words. – Yours, etc,
