Sir, - R. Walsh (September 1st) raised some issues in relation to the blood supply that are worthy of comment.

Mr Walsh's interest in the BTSB is welcome and indeed particularly apposite, as it reflects the views of many hospital patients who have benefited from a transfusion and appreciate the importance of a regular blood supply. It is through getting informed and interested feedback that the BTSB will be in a position to improve the service it provides and ensure that those in hospital get the blood they need.

Lest there be any impression to the contrary, I wish to confirm that, thanks to the generosity of donors, hospital demands for blood and blood products are currently being met. With the support of the nations' donors, the BTSB is committed to ensuring that this position is maintained.

We have extended the evening opening hours of Pelican House to make it easier for donors to attend. We regularly visit the country's universities and hospitals among the 200 clinic locations we service nationwide. We are constantly seeking new donors and encourage existing donors to return whenever they can. - Yours, etc.,
