BOOM TIMES ON DUBLIN BAY

DEREK CAMPBELL,

DEREK CAMPBELL,

Sir, - Like Brendan McRedmond (May 15th) I found early boyhood recollections being stirred when reading "Weather Eye" on May 9th. I can distinctly recall the deep sounding booms from where I lived at the time on the coast of Sutton during anti-cyclonic weather.

I am sure Mr McRedmond's father was correct in saying that the booms were fired from the Kish, but not the lighthouse, as this wasn't there until 1966. Prior to this date, lightships served shipping needs.

Brendan McWilliam's articles are always so interesting. I have collected every one of them since the series started in 1988 - just over 4,250. Congratulations, Mr McWilliams. - Yours, etc., DEREK CAMPBELL,
