Sir, The former Mr Brendan Halligan, has admitted that the pay deal of Dr Eddie O'Connor did breach government guidelines. It has also emerged that the gross cost of Dr O'Connor's settlement with the Government is close to £1 million (Irish Times, July 19th).
How does the Minister propose to fund this £1 million "arrangement"? Does he have a slush fund for such eventualities, or is it a case once again of the honest taxpayers (including semi state executives past and present, who operated within government guidelines) being left to pay the piper, when they hadn't even heard the tune? Yours, etc., Sutton, Dublin 13.
