Boris Johnson’s party problem

Sir, – Finn McRedmond imagines future historians asking if the downfall of Boris Johnson was due to "haplessness, mendacity, glory-seeking or hubris" (Opinion & Analysis, January 20th).

Surely it’s simply the familiar mistake of putting your party before your country? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – David Davies addressing Boris Johnson quoted Leo Amery’s comment to Neville Chamberlain in 1940 when he said, “You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing ... In the name of God, go”.

It is worth adding that Amery himself was quoting what Oliver Cromwell famously said when he forcibly ejected the Long Parliament in 1653. – Yours, etc,
