Sir, - We read with dreary regularity about the problems of disposing of our ever-increasing quantities of waste and the need for us to reduce, re-use and recycle. Why then are the new owners of Premier Dairies planning to close the last milk bottling plant in Dublin? Surely we should be encouraging the dairies to extend the use of milk bottles, thereby reducing waste. According to the dairy it is cheaper for them to use bottles than cartons. However, they claim that consumer demand is not sufficient to continue this service.
As a current milk bottle user who dreads the increased waste I will produce with cartons I wonder why we are hearing nothing from the local authorities which will have to collect and dispose of all the extra cartons. Surely they are outraged by the decision to close the Rathfarnham milk bottling plant? - Yours, etc., Angela Lemass,
