Madam, - A front-page photograph in your edition of October 10th showed the new Irish ambassador presenting his credentials to Queen Elizabeth in London. The ambassador had his head bowed and eyes downcast.

It is inappropriate that an ambassador of Ireland should bow on my, his or our behalf. Protocol is merely a system of habit and practice.

Our ambassador should meet the leader or ruler of another state as a citizen on behalf of citizens and thus be respectful but unbowed. - Yours, etc,
